Grand Rapids, MI (January 21, 2025) – A devastating crash on northbound US-131 Monday night claimed the life of a 54-year-old Grand Rapids man. Emergency crews, including Michigan State Police (MSP) and local paramedics, responded to the collision, which occurred during snowy conditions.
Authorities report that the Grand Rapids man was driving in front of a semi-truck when he began to lose control of his vehicle. The semi-truck driver attempted to brake, but the icy road caused the truck to slide into the guardrail and jackknife. The two vehicles subsequently collided, resulting in fatal injuries to the car’s driver, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The semi-truck driver was unharmed.
Images captured by nearby cameras showed limited visibility due to the snow, with emergency vehicles and the jackknifed semi-truck visible through the storm. Northbound US-131 was closed for several hours as investigators worked to reconstruct the events leading to the crash and crews cleared the debris. The highway has since reopened.
