Salt Lake City, UT (January 17, 2025) – A tragic multi-car collision on westbound I-80 near 7200 West has left one person dead and another in serious condition. The crash, confirmed by Lt. Cameron Roden of the Utah Highway Patrol, involved five vehicles and occurred amidst slow-moving traffic caused by two separate crashes further west.
The incident began when a pickup truck rear-ended a passenger vehicle, triggering a chain reaction involving three additional vehicles. Two of the five vehicles caught fire as a result of the collision. Tragically, the driver of the passenger vehicle, identified as a 47-year-old man from Tooele, was killed. The driver of the pickup truck, a 33-year-old male, sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment.
Westbound I-80 is currently closed at 7200 West, with traffic being diverted to the 7200 West off-ramp. Officials estimate that the closure will remain in place for another two to three hours as crews investigate the scene and work to clear the area.
Multi-Car Collisions in Utah
Multi-car collisions, such as the one on I-80, often result in severe consequences due to the complexity and force of chain-reaction crashes. Highways and interstates, with their high traffic volumes and speeds, are particularly susceptible to such incidents, especially during periods of congestion.
The Utah Department of Transportation stresses the importance of maintaining a safe following distance and staying alert to prevent chain-reaction accidents. Rear-end collisions, like the one that triggered this tragic incident, can often be avoided by adhering to speed limits and allowing ample time to react to changing traffic conditions.
For victims and their families, crashes of this magnitude can result in significant emotional and financial challenges. Understanding legal rights and pursuing fair compensation are essential steps in the recovery process. Thorough investigations are vital for determining fault and ensuring accountability.
