Johnstonville, CA (January 16, 2025) – A tragic multi-vehicle crash occurred Tuesday morning on Highway 36 near the intersection with Highway 395 in the Lassen County community of Johnstonville. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has reported that the collision, caused by an allegedly intoxicated driver, claimed the life of a 47-year-old woman and critically injured a 10-year-old girl.
The incident unfolded around 7:45 AM when 49-year-old William Dougherty of Sacramento, driving a 1998 Ford van, approached a traffic light at high speed. The light had just turned green for four vehicles stopped at the intersection. According to CHP officials, Dougherty was unable to slow, stop, or take evasive action and collided with a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox carrying two passengers. The impact triggered a chain reaction, with the Chevrolet striking a Freightliner truck driven by a Florida man.
Dougherty attempted to veer right to avoid the Freightliner but instead struck a Jeep Wrangler, which then collided with another vehicle, the fifth and final one involved in the crash. Tragically, the Chevrolet driver, a 47-year-old Susanville woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 10-year-old girl riding with her suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno for treatment.
Five additional occupants, including Dougherty, sustained injuries and were treated at the scene. The CHP has since arrested Dougherty, who now faces charges including second-degree murder.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the woman who lost her life. We also extend our hopes for the recovery of the young girl and all others injured in this heartbreaking incident.
