West Haven, CT (January 16, 2025) – A pedestrian tragically lost his life after being struck by an SUV on Interstate 95 Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred near exit 43 around 12:25 p.m., prompting a significant emergency response and road closure.
According to Connecticut State Police, 41-year-old Suniel Michael Ross, of Woonsocket, Rhode Island, crossed the southbound lanes of I-95, traversed the median, and entered the northbound side of the highway. A driver came to a sudden stop when Ross stepped onto the roadway, causing a second driver, operating a 2010 Toyota RAV4, to swerve to avoid the stopped vehicle. Unfortunately, the SUV struck Ross during this maneuver.
Emergency responders quickly arrived and transported Ross to Yale New Haven Hospital. Tragically, despite their efforts, Ross succumbed to his injuries. Authorities closed the northbound lanes of I-95 for several hours to conduct an in-depth investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
Our thoughts are with Suniel Michael Ross’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Accidents on Interstate Highways in Connecticut
Pedestrian accidents on interstate highways, though less common, often result in severe or fatal injuries due to the high speeds of passing vehicles. Highways like I-95 in Connecticut are major thoroughfares with heavy traffic, making pedestrian presence exceptionally hazardous. When emergencies occur, such as a pedestrian on the roadway, drivers must act quickly, often with limited time and space to react.
Statewide data highlights the risks associated with pedestrian accidents. The Connecticut Department of Transportation notes that pedestrian fatalities have been rising, with high-speed zones posing the greatest danger. While pedestrian activity on highways is uncommon, the resulting crashes frequently lead to extended investigations and road closures to ensure all contributing factors are assessed.
If you or a loved one has been affected by a pedestrian accident, it is crucial to seek support. Medical attention, legal guidance, and emotional assistance are often necessary in the aftermath of such tragedies. Holding responsible parties accountable can also provide closure and help prevent future incidents.
