Noatak, AK (January 15, 2025) – A 36-year-old woman tragically lost her life in an ATV crash in the Northwest Arctic village of Noatak, according to Alaska State Troopers. The accident, which occurred around 6:30 a.m., also left a male passenger injured.
Authorities identified the deceased as Georgia Onalik, who was driving the ATV on Willow St when the vehicle veered off the road for unknown reasons. It is unclear whether the ATV rolled or sustained other damage after leaving the roadway.
Community members discovered both Onalik and her male passenger lying near the vehicle. They were transported to the local clinic, where Onalik was pronounced dead. The passenger, whose injuries were described as not life-threatening, was medevaced to Kotzebue for further treatment.
Onalik and the passenger were in a long-term romantic relationship and shared children, according to troopers.
Our deepest condolences go out to Georgia Onalik’s family and loved ones during this difficult time, and we wish the injured passenger a swift recovery.
ATV Safety in Alaska
ATVs are widely used in rural Alaska for transportation and recreation, but they come with risks, especially at higher speeds or on uneven terrain. According to the Alaska Department of Public Safety, factors such as speeding, poor visibility, and road conditions significantly increase the likelihood of accidents.
To reduce the risks, ATV riders are encouraged to wear helmets, operate vehicles at safe speeds, and remain vigilant of their surroundings. Proper maintenance and familiarity with local terrain can also play a critical role in preventing accidents.
For families affected by tragic incidents like this, navigating the aftermath can be overwhelming. Seeking support from local resources and legal professionals can provide guidance in addressing medical expenses, investigations, and other challenges.
