Roseville, CA (January 12, 2025) – A tragic crash on eastbound Interstate 80 in Roseville early Saturday morning claimed the life of a 9-year-old girl. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that a woman suspected of driving under the influence caused the collision and was subsequently arrested.
The incident occurred around 5:20 AM when the driver of a Hyundai Elantra, a 36-year-old woman from Sacramento, lost control of her vehicle, causing it to spin out and come to a stop in the fast lane. The driver exited the disabled vehicle and began walking along the shoulder of the freeway.
While many vehicles managed to swerve around the Hyundai, a Honda CR-V driven by a 50-year-old man from Fremont was unable to avoid hitting the stationary car. The collision caused significant damage, and the two juvenile passengers in the CR-V suffered injuries. One of the passengers, a 9-year-old girl, sustained major injuries and was transported to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
CHP officers located and arrested the woman from the Hyundai on suspicion of driving under the influence. Officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
This tragic incident highlights the devastating consequences of impaired driving. The victim services manager for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in California noted an alarming increase in DUI-related crashes across the state.
Our thoughts are with the family of the young girl and all those affected by this tragedy. We extend our deepest condolences during this incredibly difficult time.
