Lakeland, FL (January 11, 2025) – A dramatic police chase involving a stolen black Camaro resulted in a severe crash at Memorial Blvd, leaving two people with significant injuries. The incident unfolded at approximately 2:49 p.m. when a Florida Highway Patrol trooper spotted the speeding Camaro, believed to be involved in prior police evasions.
The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Jaaziel Calero Nuez, was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle with swapped Florida and Georgia plates. When troopers attempted to pull him over, Nuez fled, leading to a high-speed chase involving three patrol vehicles. The pursuit came to a violent conclusion when Nuez ran a red light at an intersection, crashing into an SUV and a sedan.
Emergency responders from Lakeland Fire and Rescue arrived quickly to assist the victims. The SUV’s driver and passenger were trapped inside their vehicle due to the impact, which crushed the driver-side door. Firefighters worked diligently to free the occupants by prying open the door. Both individuals sustained significant injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Following the crash, law enforcement apprehended Nuez as he attempted to reach for a weapon under the Camaro’s floorboard. He resisted arrest, necessitating the use of a taser before being taken into custody. A search of the vehicle and Nuez uncovered a cache of incriminating items, including marijuana, cash, burglary tools, and loaded magazines. The Camaro was later confirmed as stolen from Miami.
The crash remains under investigation by authorities, and charges against Nuez include fleeing police, possession of marijuana, firearm offenses, and multiple theft-related counts.
Our thoughts are with those injured in this traumatic event, and we wish them a swift and full recovery.
