Winter Weather Driving Safety in Illinois
Winter weather conditions like those in Jefferson County significantly increase the risk of vehicle collisions. Snow, ice, and reduced visibility make driving more dangerous, especially on highways like I-57 and I-64. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, hundreds of crashes occur annually during winter storms, emphasizing the importance of safe driving practices.
Drivers are encouraged to reduce speeds, allow extra travel time, maintain a safe distance from snowplows and road crews, and avoid sudden braking or sharp turns on icy roads. Staying updated on road conditions and weather forecasts before traveling can also help reduce risks.
