Newport News, VA (January 10, 2024) – A woman was injured on Friday morning following a pedestrian crash on Interstate 64 eastbound, according to Virginia State Police. The incident occurred around 2:55 a.m., prompting an emergency response.
The injured individual, identified as 23-year-old Lela Evangeline Butler, was transported to Riverside Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Preliminary reports indicate that Butler had pulled over on the shoulder of the interstate and exited her vehicle in search of her dog, which she believed had jumped out of the car. While walking across the interstate, she was struck by the driver of a 2017 Hyundai Genesis.
Authorities confirmed that Butler was intoxicated at the time of the incident. Charges against her will be pursued once she is released from the hospital. The crash remains under investigation as police work to determine all contributing factors.
Our thoughts are with everyone involved, and we wish Butler a full recovery.
