Midland County, TX (January 10, 2025) – A tragic three-vehicle crash claimed the life of a 57-year-old Odessa man on Thursday morning at the State Highway 349 and State Highway 158 Overpass in Midland County. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) confirmed the fatality and identified the victim as Richard Allen Howell.
According to Sergeant Steven Blanco of DPS, the crash occurred when 27-year-old Sheniel Nicholas Samuels, driving a Kenworth truck with a towed trailer, was traveling westbound on SH 349 at an unsafe speed for the icy road conditions. Samuels veered into the eastbound lane, colliding with Howell’s Chevrolet Silverado and a Dodge Ram 1500 driven by 32-year-old Adrian Mathew Armendariz, both also of Odessa.
Howell succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Neither Samuels nor Armendariz sustained injuries in the crash. The incident remains under investigation, and no additional details have been released at this time.
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Howell’s family and loved ones during this grieving time.
Dangers of Icy Road Conditions in Texas
Winter weather poses significant risks for drivers, particularly on highways like SH 349 and SH 158. Icy roads can make it challenging to maintain control of a vehicle, especially at high speeds or in large trucks. Crashes caused by poor road conditions, such as this tragic incident, highlight the importance of caution during adverse weather.
Drivers are reminded to reduce speed, increase following distance, and remain vigilant when navigating icy or slick roadways. The Texas Department of Transportation urges motorists to check weather updates and road conditions before traveling to ensure safety.
