Wakulla County, FL (January 10, 2025) – A 9-year-old boy was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash near the intersection of Country Way and Excalibur East Dr on Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 3:55 p.m. as the child was riding a dirt bike through the Camelot neighborhood.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the boy was traveling north on East Excalibur Dr when a red SUV turned onto Country Way and into the correct travel lane. The front of the dirt bike collided with the SUV, throwing the young rider from his bike. The driver of the SUV fled the scene, leaving the boy critically injured.
Emergency responders rushed the boy to the hospital, where he continues to fight for his life. Local residents, including neighbors like James Lardakis, who was the first to assist the child, were left shaken by the incident. “It made me sad seeing a child, so small, almost die,” Lardakis said.
FHP and the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office launched a swift investigation and arrested 44-year-old Alfreda Leshon Nelson in connection with the hit-and-run. Nelson, who was driving the red SUV involved in the crash, was charged with leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury and is currently being held in the Wakulla County Jail.
Community members have rallied to support the boy’s family, raising funds to aid his recovery and offering rewards for information during the search for the suspect.
Hit-and-Run Crashes in Florida
Hit-and-run incidents, particularly those involving children, are devastating for families and communities. Drivers are legally and morally obligated to remain at the scene of an accident to assist injured parties and provide information. Fleeing the scene only compounds the harm and adds legal consequences.
In Florida, hit-and-run crashes are all too common. The state continues to address this issue with public awareness campaigns and stricter penalties for offenders. However, these tragedies underscore the importance of vigilance, compassion, and accountability on the road.
For the victims and their families, the aftermath of a hit-and-run is both emotionally and financially overwhelming. From medical care to legal proceedings, they require significant support to navigate the challenges ahead.
