Blue Summit, MO (January 7, 2025) – A tragic accident involving a dump truck claimed the life of a longtime Jackson County Public Works employee on Sunday afternoon, January 5, in Blue Summit, Missouri. The victim, identified as Everett Carter, 61, was completing snow removal operations when the incident occurred.
The crash happened around 4:30 PM on Ashland Ave, north of 20th St, during blizzard conditions sweeping through the Kansas City area. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Carter exited a 2017 International Dump Truck when it began sliding on the icy roadway, striking him. Carter succumbed to his injuries shortly after the collision.
A parked 2005 Honda CR-V was also hit by the sliding dump truck. A man inside the vehicle sustained injuries that were not considered serious. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to assist the injured and secure the area.
Jackson County Executive Frank White Jr. expressed his condolences in a statement released on Monday, describing Carter as a dedicated employee who served the county for 40 years, with the last eight spent in the public works department. “This is a heartbreaking loss for our entire Jackson County family,” White said. “Everett Carter dedicated four decades of his life to serving our community with pride and professionalism. We will forever be grateful for his service and deeply miss his presence. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”
County snow removal operations were paused following the incident, allowing staff to process Carter’s tragic passing.
Our deepest condolences go out to Everett Carter’s family, friends, and colleagues as they honor his memory and grieve this loss.
Safety Precautions During Snow Removal in Missouri
Snow removal operations are critical for maintaining safety on Missouri roads during winter storms, but they also pose unique risks for workers involved in these essential services. Accidents like the one involving Everett Carter underscore the importance of following strict safety protocols to prevent further tragedies.
Snowplow operators and other workers are urged to ensure equipment is properly maintained and inspected before and during operations. Extra precautions, such as setting parking brakes securely and avoiding icy slopes when possible, can help minimize the risk of sliding or losing control.
Drivers sharing the road with snow removal vehicles should maintain a safe distance, exercise caution around equipment, and remain alert to avoid contributing to hazardous conditions.
