Harrison County, WV (January 4, 2025) – A significant structure fire broke out Saturday afternoon on the 4100 block of Shinnston Pike in Erie, trapping three occupants on the second story of the building. The fire, which started at approximately 2:37 p.m., quickly spread, causing heavy smoke on the first floor and making escape from the upper levels impossible.

Harrison County Fire Department and additional emergency responders arrived swiftly to combat the flames and initiate rescue efforts. Two of the trapped individuals were successfully rescued early in the operation, with responders continuing to search for the third victim. After an intensive effort, the third occupant was located and brought to safety. All three victims were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.

Due to the severity of the fire, crews transitioned to a defensive strategy to control the blaze while ensuring the safety of responders. Shinnston Pike was closed to allow fire crews and equipment to access the area effectively. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local authorities.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time, and we hope for their full recovery.

Structure Fires in West Virginia

Structure fires are a serious hazard across West Virginia, particularly in residential areas. The risk of injury and property damage is heightened in cases of delayed escape or heavy smoke conditions, as seen in the Shinnston Pike fire. According to state fire safety reports, improper heating, electrical faults, and unattended cooking are among the leading causes of residential fires.

Fires involving entrapment emphasize the importance of having functional smoke detectors, accessible escape routes, and an emergency plan in place. Individuals living in multi-story homes should ensure that windows and stairwells remain unobstructed and consider equipping upper floors with emergency ladders.

In the aftermath of a structure fire, victims often face emotional and financial challenges. Understanding how to work with insurance companies and explore available resources is essential for recovery. Additionally, fire victims may benefit from consulting with professionals to ensure they receive adequate support for medical and property-related expenses.
