Kona, HI (January 2, 2025) – Hawai‘i Island police responded to a tragic traffic collision just two minutes into the new year on Kinue Rd in South Kona. The crash involved a 2018 Honda Accord and a pedestrian, leaving the pedestrian dead.
The victim has been identified as 52-year-old Jelson Kainue Leslie of Captain Cook. Police say the crash occurred as Leslie was setting up fireworks on the roadway to celebrate the New Year. The Honda Accord, driven by 23-year-old Kelly Kaikili Losalio of Captain Cook, struck Leslie and subsequently collided with a parked 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck.
Leslie was transported to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that speed and impairment were contributing factors to the collision.
Losalio was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant (OVUII) and negligent homicide. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
