Sumner County, KS (January 2, 2025) – A tragic crash on the Kansas Turnpike southbound near Exit 33 claimed the lives of two people and injured a dozen others overnight. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported the incident occurred just after midnight Wednesday, south of the Kansas Star Casino.
The crash involved a van hauling a trailer that overturned in the southbound lanes and was subsequently struck by an SUV. Among the victims was 58-year-old Ernestina Eumana-Alvarez of Minneapolis, Minnesota, who was a passenger in the van, and an infant boy. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The van’s driver, a 55-year-old Minnesota man, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a hospital. Additionally, three women (ages 27, 58, and 67), two men (ages 47 and 63), a 64-year-old woman, and a one-year-old boy from the van were injured and taken to area hospitals. Three men in the SUV also sustained injuries.
The southbound lanes of the Kansas Turnpike were closed following the crash and reopened around 7:30 a.m., with the left lane remaining closed for continued investigation and cleanup.
