Waukesha, WI (January 1, 2025) – A tragic collision on the evening of December 30, 2024, at the intersection of E. Sunset Drive and Guthrie Road has left a 17-year-old dead and a 19-year-old facing charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle.

The Waukesha Police and Fire Departments responded to reports of a rollover crash involving multiple vehicles at approximately 7:25 p.m. Witnesses stated that one vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at a stop sign before striking two other vehicles. Emergency responders provided medical assistance to those involved, with Flight for Life transporting the critically injured 17-year-old to Froedtert Hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, the young victim was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Other individuals involved in the crash sustained non-life-threatening injuries, received treatment at the scene, and were later released. The driver of the suspect vehicle, a 19-year-old, showed signs of impairment and was arrested on charges of Operating While Intoxicated. Further charges, including Homicide by Intoxicated Use of a Vehicle, are pending.

The Waukesha Police Major Crash Task Force, in collaboration with the Wisconsin State Patrol Traffic Reconstruction Unit, continues to investigate this devastating incident.

The loss of a young life is deeply saddening, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Addressing Drunk Driving in Wisconsin

Drunk driving remains a critical issue across Wisconsin, with far-reaching consequences for victims and their families. According to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, over 6,000 alcohol-related crashes were reported in the state in 2023, leading to hundreds of fatalities and injuries.

High-speed collisions at intersections, such as the one at Sunset Drive and Guthrie Road in Waukesha, highlight the dangers posed by impaired driving. Alcohol and drug impairment reduce reaction times, impair judgment, and drastically increase the likelihood of severe or fatal crashes.

Efforts to combat drunk driving include strict enforcement of OWI laws, public awareness campaigns, and the promotion of safe driving alternatives like ridesharing or designated drivers. These measures aim to prevent tragedies like the one that claimed a young life in Waukesha.
