Effingham, IL (December 30, 2024) – A tragic head-on collision occurred early Saturday morning, December 28, near the intersection of S Banker St and Jaycee Ave, claiming the life of one driver and leaving two others injured. Emergency responders from the Effingham Police Department and Illinois State Police were dispatched to the scene at approximately 6:30 a.m.

Authorities confirmed that James Ashley, 41, of Effingham, was driving a Dodge Durango southbound on S Banker St when he crossed the solid yellow center line, colliding head-on with a GMC pickup truck towing a camper. The pickup was driven by 64-year-old Scott Mosher, with his wife, Kathy Mosher, 61, as the passenger.

James Ashley was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 7:15 a.m. on December 28. Scott and Kathy Mosher were also hospitalized but sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Preliminary autopsy results suggest that medical issues may have contributed to the accident, though further details are pending the official autopsy and toxicology report, expected in about a month. The Effingham County Coroner, along with the Illinois State Police, continues to investigate this incident.

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family of the deceased victim. We also wish the injured individuals a swift recovery.

Head-On Collisions in Illinois

Head-on collisions are among the most dangerous types of accidents, often resulting in severe injuries or fatalities due to the high force of impact. In Illinois, these accidents frequently occur on undivided roads when a driver veers across the center line, as seen in the tragic crash on S Banker St.

Factors that contribute to such collisions include distracted driving, medical emergencies, fatigue, or impaired driving. In this case, preliminary reports suggest a potential medical issue may have played a role. Across the state, head-on crashes accounted for a significant proportion of fatal accidents in recent years, highlighting the need for improved road safety measures.

Survivors of head-on collisions often face prolonged recovery periods and financial challenges, including medical bills, vehicle repairs, and lost income. It’s crucial for victims and their families to seek legal guidance to navigate the complexities of accident claims and secure the compensation they deserve.
