Queens, NY (December 29, 2024) – A tragic crash in South Ozone Park on Saturday morning resulted in the death of one pedestrian and injuries to two others after a taxi was sent careening onto the sidewalk. The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 AM at the intersection of 115th Avenue and Lefferts Boulevard.
According to authorities, the collision involved a Honda Accord and a yellow cab. The impact caused the taxi to mount the sidewalk, striking three pedestrians who were standing on the southeast corner of the intersection. All three victims were transported to Jamaica Hospital for treatment.
One of the pedestrians, identified as 51-year-old Vidya Dookran-Franco, succumbed to her injuries. Witnesses described the scene as gruesome, with one bystander noting, “Being pinned between a car and a wall, the way it looked … it did look gruesome.” Family members remembered Dookran-Franco as a loving and kind individual who brought joy to those around her.
The other two victims, men aged 44 and 49, are reported to be in stable condition. Both drivers involved in the crash remained at the scene and are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Police have stated that no criminality is suspected at this time.
