Columbia, SC (December 29, 2024) – A police pursuit that began with a domestic incident and shooting ended tragically on Saturday with a fatal crash at Garners Ferry Rd and Hazelwood Rd in Columbia. The incident resulted in the deaths of a suspect and another driver, as well as the driver’s dog, according to local authorities.
Officers, in collaboration with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, located the suspect’s vehicle in the 4000 block of Leesburg Road. However, when officers attempted to make contact, the suspect fled, leading to a pursuit that culminated in the fatal crash at Garners Ferry Rd and Hazelwood Rd. The collision resulted in the death of another driver and their dog.
Police report that the suspect, while still in his vehicle, suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the lower body. He was detained and transported to a hospital, where he later died.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating the crash. No law enforcement officers fired their weapons during the incident.
The Richland County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identities of the deceased.
