Malcom, IA (December 28, 2024) – A devastating multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 80 near the Grinnell Exit on Friday evening left one person dead and four others injured. The crash caused significant disruptions, with both eastbound and westbound lanes closed for hours.
Emergency responders from Malcom and surrounding areas quickly arrived at the scene to provide assistance to the injured victims. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. when an eastbound semi-truck rear-ended a 2004 Ford Econoline van, crossed the median, and collided with another semi-truck traveling westbound. The impact was severe, resulting in multiple injuries and one fatality.
The westbound semi-truck driver, a 29-year-old from Chicago, tragically lost their life at the scene. Authorities are withholding the individual’s name pending family notification. The driver of the eastbound semi-truck, a 43-year-old from Abingdon, Illinois, sustained injuries. Additionally, the van’s driver, a 22-year-old from Green Bay, Wisconsin, along with two passengers, ages 34 and 39, were also injured.
Traffic on I-80 was at a standstill for over four hours. An eastbound lane reopened at approximately 8:45 p.m., and additional lanes were cleared an hour later. By Saturday morning, all lanes were operational, according to updates from Iowa 511. The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
