Bristol, ME (December 23, 2024) – A tragic head-on collision in Bristol on Saturday afternoon left one man dead and another injured. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash, which occurred at 3:44 p.m. on Bristol Rd at the intersection with Walpole Meeting House Rd.
Authorities reported that a blue 2012 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 65-year-old Timothy M. Tibbetts of Southport, was traveling northbound on Bristol Rd. According to their findings, Tibbetts failed to yield to a turning vehicle and instead passed it, entering the southbound lane. This maneuver resulted in a head-on collision with a southbound silver 2007 Volvo Station Wagon driven by 70-year-old Allen H. Millett of Damariscotta.
Tragically, Millett succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Tibbetts, the sole occupant of his vehicle, sustained injuries considered non-life-threatening and was transported to Miles Hospital in Damariscotta for treatment. Millett, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was the sole occupant of his vehicle, while Tibbetts was reported to have been restrained at the time of the crash.
Investigators noted that speed and road conditions were contributing factors to the collision. The State Medical Examiner’s Office is working to determine Millett’s exact cause of death. Deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, along with Brunswick Police Department accident reconstruction specialists, continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
Emergency crews, including the Bristol Fire Department and CLC Ambulance, worked diligently at the scene, which was cleared by 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Despite the active investigation, the road remained open to traffic during the response.
Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of those impacted by this tragic accident.
Fatal Car Accidents in Maine
Head-on collisions, such as the one in Bristol, are among the most severe types of crashes on Maine’s roadways. Statewide data shows that these incidents frequently result in fatal or serious injuries, particularly on rural roads with limited barriers to prevent lane crossings. Bristol Rd, like many roads in the region, presents challenges due to its curves and intersections, which can increase the risk of accidents under certain conditions.
Preliminary findings in this case highlight speed and road conditions as significant factors. Drivers are reminded of the importance of adhering to speed limits and adjusting driving behavior to match weather and road conditions. Maine authorities encourage all motorists to remain vigilant and ensure proper seatbelt use, which can reduce the severity of injuries in collisions.
As this investigation continues, officials will likely review factors such as vehicle maintenance and visibility conditions at the time of the crash. Outcomes of investigations like these are critical in identifying safety improvements to prevent similar tragedies.
If you or someone you know has been affected by a serious car accident, it’s essential to seek professional guidance and support.
