Columbia, KY (December 23, 2024) – A devastating two-vehicle collision occurred on December 21, at approximately 4:30 p.m. on the KY 55 Bypass near Pelham Branch Rd in Adair County. The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 responded to the scene alongside local emergency services. The crash tragically resulted in the death of a juvenile and multiple injuries.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Joel Hammack, 46, of Crossville, TN, was driving a 2016 Ford F150 at a high rate of speed southbound on KY 55 Bypass. Mr. Hammack collided with a slower-moving 2018 Kia Sorento operated by Townya Ritzie, 62, of Columbia. The impact caused Ms. Ritzie’s vehicle to veer off the road and overturn.
Tragically, a juvenile passenger in Ms. Ritzie’s vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Adair County Coroner. Two other passengers, including Susan Morgan, 66, of Columbia, and a juvenile, sustained serious injuries and were transported to the hospital for treatment. Ms. Ritzie and another juvenile passenger suffered minor injuries and were also taken to the hospital. Mr. Hammack and his passenger, Walter Nichols, 45, of Bean Station, TN, were treated for minor injuries and released.
Following the collision, Joel Hammack was arrested and currently faces multiple charges, including Vehicular Homicide Under the Influence of Alcohol, DUI 4th Offense or Greater, and several counts of Assault. Walter Nichols, who became combative at the scene, was also arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including Assault and Disorderly Conduct. The KSP investigation remains ongoing.
