Killeen, TX (December 23, 2024) – A chaotic scene unfolded at the Killeen Mall when a driver crashed a black pickup truck into the shopping center, injuring at least five individuals. Law enforcement officers shot and killed the driver inside the mall following the violent incident.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that the situation began as a pursuit after a trooper attempted to stop the truck for suspected intoxicated driving. The chase led to the mall’s parking lot, where the driver proceeded to crash through the glass entrance and continue driving inside the building. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. Saturday.
Emergency responders from Killeen Fire and Rescue assisted the injured, but details about their conditions remain unclear. Those injured ranged in age and were immediately transported to area hospitals. Authorities have yet to release specific updates on their health statuses.
Law enforcement officers, including DPS troopers, Killeen Police Department personnel, and off-duty officers from three additional agencies, pursued the suspect on foot through the mall. A gunfire exchange ensued, resulting in the suspect’s death. The suspect was identified as 53-year-old John Darrel Schultz of Kempner.
During a press conference, officials clarified that initial reports of an active shooter were false, and the mall was declared secure by 6 p.m. The Texas Rangers Division is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
“Our thoughts are with those injured and everyone impacted by this terrifying event,” DPS representatives stated. Authorities have urged the public to stay away from the mall area as investigations continue.
