Garden City Township, MN (December 19, 2024) – Emergency responders, including the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office, attended to a two-vehicle collision that occurred at approximately 9:14 AM at the intersection of Highway 169 and County Road 13 in Blue Earth County.

The accident involved a 2018 Ford Escape traveling eastbound on County Road 13 and a 2024 Freightliner semi traveling southbound on Highway 169. The vehicles collided in the intersection under undetermined circumstances.

The driver of the Ford Escape, a 71-year-old male from Janesville, MN, sustained injuries and was treated at the scene. His identity is set to be released later today. Joshua William Krieger, 38, of Cedar Falls, IA, was driving the Freightliner semi. He was uninjured and did not require transportation to a healthcare facility. Emergency responders reported that airbags deployed in the Ford Escape but not in the semi-truck.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether road conditions or other factors played a role. Our thoughts are with the individuals affected by this accident.

Intersection Collisions in Minnesota

Intersections like the one at Highway 169 and County Road 13 are frequent sites of vehicle collisions, often due to misjudgments, failure to yield, or poor visibility. In Minnesota, intersection-related accidents account for a significant proportion of crashes, with rural areas seeing higher rates of severe incidents due to higher speeds.

To minimize risks at intersections, drivers are advised to slow down, observe traffic signals and signage, and remain vigilant for other vehicles and pedestrians. For truck drivers operating larger vehicles, like semi-trailers, extra caution is necessary to account for their longer stopping distances and reduced maneuverability.

If you are involved in an intersection accident, documenting the scene and consulting with local authorities are essential steps. It is also important to seek medical attention for any injuries, as symptoms may not always be immediately apparent.
