Bronx, NY (December 18, 2024) – A New York City sanitation worker was critically injured on Monday morning after being struck by a vehicle in the Soundview section of the Bronx. The accident occurred around 8 a.m. on Colgate Ave while 32-year-old Ahmad Ladson was performing his duties.
According to investigators, a Toyota Highlander, driven by a 40-year-old woman, struck Ladson while he was in the street. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Emergency responders quickly arrived, and Ladson was transported to Jacobi Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.
The crash was captured on a surveillance camera from a nearby building, providing investigators with additional context. Police confirmed that no arrests have been made, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The New York City Department of Sanitation released a statement expressing their support for Ladson, saying, “Sanitation Workers have a dangerous job, as the horrifying video of this collision shows. Sanitation Worker Ladson remains at Jacobi Hospital, receiving round-the-clock care, and every single one of New York’s Strongest is incredibly grateful to the medical team there. Our entire Department stands with Sanitation Worker Ladson’s family in this difficult time.”
Ladson, a father of three, has received an outpouring of community support. A fundraiser organized for him has already surpassed $40,000, with his family expressing gratitude for the prayers and assistance they have received. “We feel blessed he is alive and pray he will recuperate,” they shared.
Pedestrian Accidents in New York City
Pedestrian accidents are an ongoing concern in New York City, where high traffic volumes and dense urban environments increase the risks for those on foot. According to the New York Department of Transportation, pedestrian incidents often occur in areas with significant congestion or near intersections. Sanitation workers, who spend much of their day in active traffic environments, are particularly vulnerable.
This accident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks faced by essential workers in the city. Employers, drivers, and pedestrians must all exercise increased caution to help prevent tragedies like this. Drivers are encouraged to remain alert, especially in areas where workers are present, and follow all traffic laws, including reduced speed limits in work zones.
