Elkhart County, IN (December 16, 2024) – A two-vehicle crash occurred today at 12:25 p.m. at the intersection of SR 15 and CR 50 in New Paris, resulting in injuries to two individuals. Seventeen-year-old Brenna Yoder from Warsaw was taken to Elkhart General Hospital after suffering a fracture to her right leg and facial injuries.
According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, Yoder was traveling northbound on SR 15 when she was following too closely behind the vehicle driven by 40-year-old Katie Lechlitner of Syracuse. Lechlitner, who was slowing or stopping for southbound traffic, then attempted to turn west onto CR 50. Yoder reportedly failed to stop in time and collided with the rear of Lechlitner’s vehicle.
While Lechlitner was unharmed, her passenger, 66-year-old Leslie Darr of Syracuse, sustained neck and back injuries. Both Yoder and Darr were transported to Elkhart General Hospital by Jackson Township EMS for medical treatment.
In addition to the accident, Yoder was cited for using a telecommunications device while driving and following too closely.
Our thoughts are with those injured in this incident, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery.
Rear-End Collisions in Indiana
Rear-end accidents, like the one today in Elkhart County, are common but can lead to serious injuries, particularly when the following vehicle is traveling at speed or too closely behind. According to the Indiana State Police, following too closely and distracted driving are frequent causes of such crashes, which can cause significant damage and injuries to those involved.
In this case, the collision resulted in injuries to the motorcyclist, highlighting the importance of maintaining safe driving practices, including keeping a proper distance between vehicles and staying focused on the road. Rear-end collisions often lead to whiplash, back injuries, and, in severe cases, fractures or head injuries.
Motorists are urged to always drive attentively, avoid distractions like using a phone while driving, and ensure they maintain a safe following distance to prevent accidents and protect the safety of themselves and others on the road.
