Parke County, IN (December 16, 2024) – One person was taken to the hospital Friday night after a three-vehicle accident on US 36 near Raccoon Lake in Parke County, Indiana. The crash occurred when a van rear-ended a Chevy truck, which caused the truck to rear-end a Ford pickup that had been stopped in traffic.

According to the Parke County Sheriff’s Office, the Ford pickup was waiting to turn left onto a private drive, and the Chevy truck had stopped behind it. At that moment, the van failed to stop in time and struck the rear of the Chevy, pushing it into the Ford pickup. The driver of the van was transported to Union Hospital in Terre Haute for injuries sustained in the crash.

Bellmore First Responders, Rockville Rescue, Parke County EMS, and Double D Towing all assisted at the scene. The exact number of injuries remains unclear, but emergency responders were quick to provide medical care to those involved. The crash caused temporary delays as crews worked to clear the scene.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, and updates will be provided as new details become available. Our thoughts are with those involved in the accident, and we wish the injured individual a full and speedy recovery.

Rear-End Collisions in Indiana

Rear-end accidents are a common occurrence on Indiana’s roadways, especially in areas with heavy traffic or where vehicles are stopped, as in this incident. These types of accidents often happen when a driver is unable to stop in time to avoid a collision, typically due to distractions, following too closely, or not anticipating sudden stops.

The Indiana State Police report that rear-end collisions can result in a range of injuries, including whiplash, back pain, and more severe injuries depending on the impact. Chain reaction accidents, such as this one, can multiply the potential for injuries and further complicate the situation.

To avoid rear-end collisions, drivers are encouraged to maintain a safe following distance, stay alert to changes in traffic flow, and reduce speed in areas where sudden stops may occur. This can help prevent accidents and protect everyone on the road.
