Kittitas County, WA (December 16, 2024) – A pedestrian was hospitalized after being struck by a car on I-82 near milepost 7, approximately eight miles east of Ellensburg, on Sunday evening.

According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the incident occurred around 6:19 PM as a Ford Fusion, driven by a 37-year-old Sunnyside woman, left the roadway while trying to avoid a prior crash. The vehicle struck a 39-year-old pedestrian from Surrey, British Columbia, who was standing on the left shoulder of the eastbound lanes.

Emergency responders transported the injured pedestrian to Kittitas Valley Healthcare for treatment. Fortunately, the driver was uninjured in the incident. WSP investigators determined that the crash resulted from driving too fast for road conditions.

We hope for the swift recovery of all the injured individuals.

Pedestrian Safety on Highways

Pedestrian accidents on highways, such as I-82, are particularly dangerous due to high traffic speeds and reduced visibility, especially at night. Factors such as poor weather, road conditions, or other accidents can increase the risks for both drivers and pedestrians.

The Washington State Patrol emphasizes the importance of driving cautiously during hazardous conditions to prevent such incidents. For pedestrians, it is critical to remain alert and move away from active traffic lanes whenever possible.

If you or someone you know has been injured in a pedestrian accident, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention and explore options for recovery, including addressing medical expenses and other related challenges.
