Fairfax County, VA (December 16, 2024) – Virginia State Police are investigating a deadly multi-vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 95 South near the 163-mile marker in the Lorton area early Sunday afternoon.
The incident happened just after 1 p.m. when two vehicles traveling at high speeds caused one to lose control. The vehicle struck a guardrail and then a jersey wall, resulting in the ejection of a passenger and partial ejection of the driver.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but the passenger tragically died at the scene. The driver, suffering life-threatening injuries, was transported to a nearby hospital for urgent care.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved. All northbound lanes of I-95 were temporarily closed as crews worked to clear the scene and assist investigators. Traffic delays extended for over two miles, causing significant backups in the area.
The Virginia State Police’s investigation into the factors leading to the crash remains ongoing.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the deceased victim, and we wish the injured driver a full and speedy recovery.
High-Speed Crashes on Interstate 95
Interstate 95, one of the busiest highways in the United States, often sees crashes involving high speeds, particularly in congested regions like Fairfax County. Excessive speed reduces a driver’s control over their vehicle, increasing the likelihood of severe accidents, especially when guardrails and barriers are involved.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), high-speed accidents are a leading cause of fatalities on major interstates. The risk of ejection during a collision also increases dramatically when seatbelt use is compromised.
In incidents like this, families affected by fatal crashes often face immense emotional and financial burdens, including medical costs, funeral expenses, and the long-term impact of such losses. Understanding one’s rights and seeking professional assistance can provide crucial support during recovery.
If you or a loved one have been injured or impacted by a high-speed crash, you are not alone.
