Kalamazoo County, MI (December 13, 2024) – A serious incident occurred Thursday morning on eastbound I-94 near the 80.5 mile marker, just east of Sprinkle Road, when a 24-foot box truck lost control and crashed into multiple emergency vehicles while they were responding to a rollover crash. The accident took place around 8:30 AM, and although no first responders were injured, the box truck driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
At the time of the crash, deputies from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) and Comstock fire crews were working to assist at the scene of the original rollover crash, which involved a separate vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from that earlier incident. However, the box truck collided with three Comstock fire trucks and a KCSO cruiser before rolling over and coming to a stop.
Eastbound I-94 at Sprinkle Road was closed for several hours as emergency responders worked to clear the scene and ensure safety. The highway has since reopened.
KCSO deputies are reminding motorists to slow down and exercise extreme caution when driving in winter conditions, particularly when approaching emergency vehicles on the side of the road. They stressed the importance of moving over for emergency vehicles as required by law.
“We urge everyone to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary during severe winter weather. If you must be on the road, please use extreme caution, reduce your speed, and allow extra time to reach your destination. Your safety—and the safety of first responders—depends on it,” said Sheriff Rick Fuller.
Winter Weather and Traffic Safety in Michigan
Incidents like the one in Kalamazoo County highlight the dangers that first responders face when working in hazardous conditions, especially during winter weather. The quick reactions of the emergency crews likely prevented more serious injuries, but the crash involving the box truck underscores the importance of driver awareness and safety.
As winter weather continues to impact road conditions, it is crucial for all drivers to follow safety guidelines, reduce speed, and remain alert for emergency vehicles. The law requires drivers to slow down and, when possible, move over when they encounter emergency vehicles with flashing lights. This simple action can save lives and prevent additional accidents.
