West Harrison, NY  (December 13, 2024) – A small plane crashed near Westchester County Airport on the northbound side of Interstate Highway 684, near Exit 2, around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 11. According to Governor Kathy Hochul, the crash resulted in the death of one individual and left another seriously injured. The crash also caused an aviation gas spill, prompting a rapid response from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which is working to contain and clean up the spill.

First responders, including New York State Police and local emergency personnel, were quick to arrive on the scene. The two individuals aboard the plane were immediately assessed by medical teams. Unfortunately, one person was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was critically injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The crash occurred in the median of I-684, which has been closed at Exit 3 northbound and Exit 2 southbound. The closures are expected to cause significant delays, and motorists are advised to avoid the area while authorities investigate the cause of the crash.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased individual.

Small Plane Accidents in New York

Accidents involving small planes can be devastating, particularly when they occur near busy highways like I-684. The proximity of this crash to Westchester County Airport raises questions about the cause, but investigations are still ongoing. The incident serves as a reminder of the inherent risks involved in small aircraft operations, which, although statistically less frequent than car accidents, can result in tragic consequences when they do occur.

The response to this crash has been swift, with local and state authorities working together to manage the aftermath. The spill of aviation gas poses an additional environmental concern, but efforts are underway to prevent further harm.
