James City County, VA (December 12, 2024) – A tragic collision on Fenton Mill Rd claimed the life of a 61-year-old woman and left another individual injured on Tuesday night. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. in the 4600 block of Fenton Mill Rd, according to James City County Police.
Authorities reported that Astrid Wagenaar-Otey, a James City County resident, was traveling in a Ford Taurus westbound on Fenton Mill Rd when the vehicle encountered a stationary Ford Escape stopped in the westbound lane. The Escape was reportedly facing the wrong direction with its headlights on, creating low-visibility conditions. In an attempt to avoid a head-on collision, the driver of the Taurus swerved, sideswiping the Escape before veering into a ditch.
Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene. Wagenaar-Otey was transported to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the Taurus sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
