Burley, ID (December 8, 2024) – A tragic multi-vehicle collision occurred on Saturday afternoon along westbound I-86 near milepost 12, just east of Declo. The crash, which involved a red 2003 Subaru Legacy and a gray 2018 Buick Enclave, resulted in one fatality.

The Idaho State Police (ISP) reported that a 43-year-old female from Englewood, Colorado, was driving the Subaru westbound when it collided with the Buick driven by a juvenile from Boise, Idaho. Both vehicles left the roadway and rolled multiple times. Tragically, the driver of the Subaru, who was not wearing a seatbelt, succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The juvenile driver of the Buick, who was wearing a seatbelt, did not require transportation for medical care.

Emergency responders from Cassia County Sheriff’s Office, Intermountain Health Ambulance, Malta Ambulance, and Malta Fire Department provided assistance at the scene. ISP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased, as well as all those affected by this devastating accident.

Multi-Vehicle Collisions in Idaho

Multi-vehicle accidents, particularly those involving rollovers, are among the most severe types of crashes. These incidents can occur for various reasons, including high speeds, distracted driving, or inclement weather. In Idaho, rural highways like I-86 can present additional risks due to long stretches of road and variable conditions.

Seatbelt usage plays a critical role in preventing fatalities during vehicle rollovers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the risk of ejection and severe injury during a crash. This tragic incident underscores the importance of safety precautions for all motorists.

For those involved in multi-vehicle collisions, following key steps after an accident is essential. Seeking immediate medical attention, reporting the incident to authorities, and documenting the scene is critical for safety and any subsequent claims. Understanding legal rights and navigating insurance claims can also aid victims and their families during the recovery process.
