Camden, ME (December 06, 2024) – A tragic pedestrian accident occurred Wednesday morning on John Street, resulting in the death of 62-year-old Michelle Bishop of Camden. Police were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:19 AM, where they found that Bishop, who was riding her motorized wheelchair along the eastbound side of the road, had been struck by a minivan traveling in the same direction.
The driver of the minivan, whose vision was reportedly obscured by the sun, did not see Bishop in his lane of travel and struck her with the passenger side of the vehicle. Despite life-saving measures performed by Camden Fire and Rescue and North East Mobile Health Service crews for approximately 40 minutes, Bishop was pronounced dead at the scene.
Maine State Police and Camden police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. The identity of the driver has not been released, and it is unclear whether any other factors contributed to the accident.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Michelle Bishop during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Accidents in Maine
Pedestrian accidents involving wheelchairs or other mobility devices can have devastating consequences, as seen in this tragic incident. In areas where pedestrians may be less visible to drivers, especially in the case of motorized wheelchairs, the risk of collisions increases, particularly when weather conditions or the time of day reduce visibility.
While the cause of this specific crash remains under investigation, the incident highlights the importance of both pedestrian and driver awareness. Drivers should be especially cautious when the sun or other environmental factors obscure their vision, and pedestrians should take extra care to ensure they are visible to oncoming traffic, particularly when traveling near busy roadways.
