Fort McCoy, FL (December 5, 2024) – Two people were killed in a tragic two-vehicle collision that occurred Wednesday night on County Road 315 in Fort McCoy. Emergency responders from Marion County Fire Rescue were dispatched at 8:36 p.m., with crews arriving at the scene at 8:47 p.m. Tragically, both individuals involved in the crash were pronounced dead at the scene, one at 8:51 p.m. and the other at 8:59 p.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the crash occurred in the 22100 block of Northeast County Road 315, an area without street lights. A Dodge Journey SUV was traveling southbound on CR 315 when it collided head-on with a Chrysler Town & Country van that was northbound. The van, for an unknown reason, crossed over the double yellow lines, leading to the fatal crash.
The drivers of both vehicles — a 38-year-old woman from Fort McCoy and a 55-year-old man from Interlachen — died on the scene. The woman had to be extricated from her vehicle. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with FHP troopers yet to determine if speed was a factor. The victims’ destinations were not known at the time of the incident.
The crash caused significant disruption, with debris from both vehicles scattered across the roadway. The two vehicles came to rest on the grassy shoulder, one on each side of the road. Marion County deputies and road crews worked to block the roadway, allowing FHP traffic homicide investigators to conduct their investigation. The roadway was reopened to traffic at 1:30 a.m.
Fatal Accidents in Florida
Fatal crashes like this one are all too common on Florida’s rural roadways, where lack of lighting and road conditions can contribute to tragic accidents. In this case, the crash occurred in an area that lacked street lighting, which could have hindered the drivers’ ability to see the oncoming hazard in time. While the specific cause of the crash is still under investigation, it serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving on poorly lit, two-lane roads.
This incident also highlights the emotional and physical toll of fatal crashes on families and communities. The loss of two lives in such a manner underscores the need for vigilance, especially on roads without sufficient lighting or clear signage. With 91 fatalities reported on Marion County roadways in 2024 alone, the importance of road safety cannot be overstated.
Local authorities, including the Florida Highway Patrol, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. As they work to understand the factors that led to this devastating collision, the community mourns the loss of two lives and reflects on the importance of safety for all road users.
