Grandview Plaza, KS (November 26, 2024) – A woman was taken to an area hospital after a rear-end collision occurred on Interstate 70 in Geary County late Tuesday afternoon. The crash, which took place at 4:36 PM just west of J. Hill Rd, near the exit to Grandview Plaza, occurred as traffic slowed for an emergency vehicle on the right shoulder. The collision involved a 2014 Jeep Cherokee and a 2015 Chevrolet Traverse. Both vehicles sustained only minor damage and were able to be driven away from the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet Traverse, Katrina Marie Schmahl, 46, of Junction City, was transported to Irwin Army Hospital for treatment of possible injuries. Fortunately, Schmahl was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident. The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, Ada Irene Mobly, 86, also of Junction City, was uninjured. She, too, was wearing her seatbelt. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. Our thoughts are with those involved, and we hope for a swift recovery for Ms. Schmahl.
Rear-End Collisions in Kansas
Rear-end collisions are unfortunately common on highways, especially in situations where traffic slows unexpectedly, such as when emergency vehicles are present on the side of the road. In this case, traffic on westbound I-70 slowed as drivers moved over to give space for an emergency vehicle. However, the driver of the Jeep Cherokee was unable to stop in time and rear-ended the Chevrolet Traverse. Thankfully, both vehicles were able to be driven away from the scene, and the damages were considered extremely minor, which is often the case when the vehicles involved are traveling at relatively low speeds.
In Kansas, where highway traffic can be particularly heavy, it is critical for drivers to stay alert and maintain a safe following distance, especially when approaching emergency vehicles or when traffic is slowing. Even though the damage in this case was minimal, the incident serves as a reminder of how quickly accidents can occur and how important it is to be prepared for sudden stops.
The swift response of emergency responders and the use of seat belts likely helped prevent more serious injuries in this crash. Local drivers should always exercise caution, particularly in areas where emergency vehicles may be present or traffic patterns may change rapidly.
Suppose you or someone you know has been involved in a rear-end collision or any other traffic accident. In that case, it’s important to seek medical attention, even if injuries are not immediately apparent, and to consider your legal options for recovery.
