Eddy County, NM (November 27, 2024) – A tragic single-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning claimed the life of an 18-year-old man in Eddy County, New Mexico. Emergency responders from the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene of the crash on Hildalgo Rural Road around 2:15 a.m. Upon investigation, it was determined that Jiovanni Melendrez, the driver of the vehicle, was traveling southbound toward Dark Canyon Road when he lost control. The vehicle veered off the roadway and onto the northbound shoulder, causing it to flip. Melendrez was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office, speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released additional details at this time.
