Clay, MO (November 25, 2024) – A multi-vehicle collision involving three vehicles resulted in injuries early Sunday morning on SB I-35 near the 9.8 mile marker. The crash, reported at approximately 5:30 AM, required the response of emergency crews and state troopers to assist those involved and restore traffic flow.
The incident began when a 2020 Freightliner, driven by a 59-year-old male from Kansas City, MO, veered off the right side of the roadway. A 2019 Ford Expedition, driven by a 34-year-old female from Bethany, MO, slowed in response. Subsequently, a 2005 Ford 500, also driven by a 59-year-old male from Kansas City, MO, collided with the rear of the Ford Expedition. The impact caused the Ford Expedition to overturn and leave the roadway.
Emergency responders from Clay County treated and transported both injured drivers to North Kansas City Hospital. The female driver of the Ford Expedition and the male driver of the Ford 500 sustained injuries but were provided immediate medical attention. The driver of the Freightliner was not reported to have sustained injuries.
All three vehicles were significantly damaged and required towing services. Traffic was temporarily impacted as crews worked to clear the scene. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Multi-Vehicle Collisions in Missouri
Missouri highways are frequently the site of multi-vehicle collisions due to the high volume of traffic and unexpected roadway hazards. Accidents like the one on SB I-35 highlight the potential for chain-reaction incidents when a single vehicle leaves its lane or roadway. While minor injuries were reported in this case, such accidents can often result in more severe outcomes depending on vehicle speeds and traffic density.
The involvement of larger vehicles, such as the Freightliner in this crash, increases the complexity of these incidents. Commercial trucks, due to their size and weight, can amplify the impact of collisions with passenger vehicles, as seen with the overturned Ford Expedition.
Clay County drivers are reminded to maintain safe distances, especially on interstates, and to remain vigilant in responding to sudden changes in traffic patterns. Awareness and adherence to road safety measures can prevent similar incidents.
