Clayton, NC (November 24, 2024) – A tragic accident in Johnston County claimed the lives of two women and injured six children when an SUV crashed into a tree near the intersection of Government Rd and Jack Rd on Saturday evening.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) reported that the crash occurred at approximately 7:05 p.m. The 24-year-old driver of a Jeep Cherokee failed to stop at a stop sign while traveling on Jack Rd. The vehicle ran off the road, struck a ditch, went airborne, and collided with a tree.
The 24-year-old woman driving the Jeep died at the scene, and her passenger, a 23-year-old woman, succumbed to her injuries later at the hospital. The SUV also carried six children, none of whom were properly restrained. All six were transported to WakeMed hospitals in Raleigh and Cary for treatment. One child remains in critical condition, while the conditions of the others have not been disclosed.
State troopers have identified speed as a contributing factor in the crash and are investigating whether alcohol may have been involved. The crash remains under investigation by NCSHP.
