Woodbridge, NJ (November 22, 2024) – A devastating fire in the Menlo Park Terrace section of Woodbridge early Thursday morning resulted in severe property damage and injuries to four police officers. Authorities report that the fire was intentionally set by the homeowner, who now faces multiple charges.
Emergency crews responded to the 3 a.m. blaze on McGuire St after receiving 911 calls about a large house fire. When officers arrived, they quickly identified the fire as arson. As they attempted to question the homeowner, identified as Anthony Burke, 57, a struggle ensued, leaving four officers injured. Burke also sustained injuries, reportedly from starting the fire, and was transported to a nearby hospital along with the injured officers for treatment.
The fire destroyed Burke’s home and caused damage to five neighboring houses. Officials from the Avenel Fire Department worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames, which left significant devastation in the residential area. Capt. Brian Murphy of the Woodbridge Police Department indicated that Burke’s house would likely need to be demolished due to the extensive damage.
Burke has been charged with six counts of aggravated arson, six counts of aggravated assault, and obstruction. His attorney information was not immediately available.
Our thoughts are with the injured officers and everyone affected by this tragic event.
House Fires in New Jersey
Residential fires like the one on McGuire St pose a significant risk to communities, often resulting in injuries, property loss, and long-term trauma for those involved. New Jersey experiences numerous house fires each year, many of which stem from preventable causes, including arson, electrical faults, or human error.
The Menlo Park Terrace neighborhood, characterized by closely packed homes, underscores the challenges of containing fires in such areas. Once a blaze begins, neighboring properties are at heightened risk, as demonstrated in this incident, where five additional houses suffered damage.
Firefighters and first responders play a critical role in addressing such emergencies, often putting their lives at risk to save others. However, these events also highlight the importance of fire safety measures, such as functioning smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and clear evacuation plans.
For individuals impacted by house fires, the path to recovery can be arduous, involving insurance claims, medical treatment, and emotional recovery. Community support and proper legal guidance are essential in these challenging times.
