Salem, IL (November 21, 2024) – A two-vehicle crash on Selmaville Rd near the Red Stripe Rd intersection southwest of Salem resulted in injuries late Tuesday afternoon. The Marion County Sheriff’s Department responded to the collision, which occurred at approximately 3:50 p.m.

According to authorities, 36-year-old Brittany Hughes of Lamar Dr in Salem was driving an SUV when she failed to slow down for traffic in front of her, leading to a collision with another SUV driven by 28-year-old Robert Dodson of Elm St in Salem.

Hughes sustained injuries and was transported to Salem Township Hospital for treatment. Dodson, however, declined medical assistance at the scene.

Following the crash, Hughes was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Dodson was also issued citations for driving on a suspended license and having no insurance.

Traffic in the area was briefly impacted as emergency crews worked to clear the scene and assist those involved. Our thoughts are with Brittany Hughes and her family as she recovers.

Vehicle Collisions in Illinois

Illinois sees numerous vehicle collisions each year, often caused by factors such as driver error, speeding, or failure to follow traffic laws. Intersections like Selmaville Rd and Red Stripe Rd are particularly vulnerable to accidents due to varying traffic conditions and driver behaviors.

Authorities work to mitigate such risks through enforcement of traffic regulations, public safety campaigns, and infrastructure improvements. However, incidents like this underscore the need for attentiveness and adherence to traffic laws to prevent accidents.

For those injured in collisions, the aftermath can involve physical recovery, financial strain, and emotional stress. Medical bills, time away from work, and vehicle repair costs can place a significant burden on victims and their families.
