Licking, MO (November 20, 2024) – A serious multi-vehicle accident occurred Tuesday afternoon on US 63, just 200 feet south of the Licking city limits, resulting in one driver suffering severe injuries. The crash was reported at approximately 2:55 PM in Texas County.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident began when an uninvolved vehicle traveling on US 63 lost its load, causing debris to scatter on the roadway. A 2003 International box truck traveling southbound stopped to assist with the cleanup. A 2009 Chevrolet Silverado, also heading southbound, struck the rear of the box truck, causing the Silverado to rotate across US 63 into the northbound lanes. The Silverado then collided with a northbound 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe.
The driver of the Silverado, a 52-year-old male from Houston, MO, suffered serious injuries and was transported by aircraft to Mercy Springfield for emergency care. Reports indicate that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The Tahoe’s driver, a 59-year-old male from Edgar Springs, MO, was uninjured. The box truck sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene, while the Silverado and Tahoe were towed by Jay’s Towing and Lucas Garage, respectively.
Emergency responders from the Licking Fire Department and other assisting officers, including Cpl. T.L. Brown, managed the scene and directed traffic while investigations were conducted. The crash disrupted traffic in the area for some time.
Debris-Related Crashes on Missouri Roads
Debris-related incidents, like the one on US 63, pose significant risks to drivers and often result in chain-reaction crashes. Unsecured loads and roadway debris can quickly escalate into dangerous situations, especially on high-speed routes. In Missouri, where rural highways like US 63 are frequently used for transportation of goods, the potential for such accidents is heightened.
Drivers encountering debris often have limited time to react, leading to sudden stops or evasive maneuvers. This crash emphasizes the importance of ensuring loads are properly secured and remaining alert for potential hazards. Missouri law holds drivers accountable for safely securing cargo to prevent these preventable dangers.
Multi-vehicle accidents resulting from debris can involve extensive damage, injuries, and disruptions. Investigations often focus on determining responsibility and whether proper precautions were taken to avoid the situation.
