Newport News, VA (November 20, 2024) – A fatal crash involving two vehicles early Monday morning on I-64 claimed the life of one driver and left another passenger with critical injuries. Virginia State Police responded to the scene at approximately 3 a.m. near Lee Hall.
Authorities reported that 22-year-old Denzel Owuraku Quaicoo, the driver of a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling westbound when his vehicle veered off the roadway and collided with a 2023 International tractor-trailer parked on the shoulder. Quaicoo was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the Elantra became entrapped in the vehicle due to the force of the collision. Emergency responders worked to extricate the passenger, who was then airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was unharmed.
The crash caused significant traffic disruptions as all westbound lanes of I-64 near Lee Hall were closed for several hours for the investigation and cleanup. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) confirmed that the lanes have since reopened.
