Jones County, NC (November 20, 2024) – A multi-car pile-up involving eight vehicles occurred Tuesday morning on Highway 17 near mile marker 120, just outside of Maysville. Officials from Jones County Emergency Services believe heavy smoke from a nearby fire may have been a contributing factor to the crash.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation confirmed the incident occurred in the northbound lanes of the highway, near the Green Way area. According to Ryan Mills of Jones County Emergency Services, the smoke originated from an ongoing fire at Green Recycling, which has been smoldering since Friday. Visibility in the area was reportedly compromised at the time of the collision.
Emergency crews, including firefighters, EMS, sheriff’s deputies, NCDOT workers, and Highway Patrol troopers, responded swiftly to the scene. Three individuals sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current conditions remain unknown.
Authorities temporarily shut down portions of the highway as crews worked to clear the scene and assist those involved. Drivers in the area are urged to proceed with caution due to the ongoing presence of smoke, which continues to impact visibility.
Our thoughts are with those injured in this incident, and we hope for their speedy recovery.
