Harwich, MA (November 19, 2024) – A violent high-speed crash involving five teenagers left two critically injured on Monday night near the intersection of Queen Anne Rd and Rebecca Rd in Harwich. The devastating accident resulted in a fiery wreck and has prompted concerns about road safety and speed awareness.
Emergency responders, including Harwich Fire and Rescue, rushed to the scene just before 11 p.m. According to officials, a BMW carrying five individuals veered off the roadway, broke through a guardrail and metal gate, and rolled multiple times before catching fire. When police arrived, four of the occupants had managed to exit the vehicle, while a fifth remained trapped inside.
Officers used fire extinguishers to suppress the flames temporarily and successfully rescued the trapped individual. Fire crews extinguished the fully involved car fire shortly after arriving at the scene. All five occupants, ranging in age from 17 to 18 and affiliated with Nauset Regional High School as current students or recent graduates, were transported to area hospitals. Two of the victims sustained critical injuries requiring immediate medical intervention.
Harwich police reported that the BMW was traveling at an estimated 130 mph moments before the crash. Officers had observed the car speeding between 60 and 80 mph on the winding road before the driver accelerated further, ultimately losing control. The group was reportedly en route to a friend’s house nearby when the incident occurred.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the crash, focusing on factors such as speed and potential contributing circumstances.
High-Speed Accidents in Massachusetts
High-speed crashes, like the one in Harwich, are a leading cause of severe injuries and fatalities on roadways. The combination of excessive speed and winding roads creates a dangerous scenario, significantly reducing a driver’s ability to react to hazards. In this case, the car’s speed not only caused the driver to lose control but also contributed to the severity of the crash, including the subsequent fire.
Massachusetts has seen numerous accidents attributed to reckless and high-speed driving, particularly among young drivers. Communities and law enforcement agencies often emphasize the importance of obeying posted speed limits and exercising caution, especially on roads that are not designed for high-speed travel. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of speeding and underscores the need for ongoing education about safe driving practices.
