Wimauma, FL (November 18, 2024) – Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers are actively searching for the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run that took the life of a 19-year-old bicyclist from Guatemala on Saturday night. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 8:20 PM on State Route 674 near 4th St.

According to a news release from FHP, the bicyclist was traveling eastbound on the highway when a red Dodge Charger with black rims, also heading east, struck him from behind. The collision occurred just west of 4th St, and the driver fled the scene, leaving the victim gravely injured. Troopers recovered vehicle debris at the crash site, believed to be from the front of the suspect’s car.

Emergency responders transported the bicyclist to a local hospital, where he tragically succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the driver remains unknown, and law enforcement is urging anyone with information to contact FHP by dialing *FHP (*347) or submitting tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers (**TIPS).

The incident remains under investigation as authorities work to locate the suspect and determine the circumstances leading to this fatal collision. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this incredibly difficult time.

Bicycle Accidents in Florida

Florida is one of the most dangerous states for bicyclists, with a high rate of accidents resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. Tragedies such as the recent hit-and-run on State Route 674 in Wimauma highlight the vulnerabilities cyclists face when sharing the road with motor vehicles.

Hit-and-run accidents compound the devastation by leaving victims without immediate help and denying families the closure of understanding what happened. Law enforcement agencies work diligently to investigate these incidents, often relying on evidence from the scene and tips from the public to identify and apprehend suspects.

Bicyclists and drivers alike are reminded to exercise caution and prioritize safety. Cyclists should use reflective gear and follow traffic laws, while drivers must remain attentive and share the road responsibly.
