Chelsea, NY (November 18, 2024) – A box truck collided with a sidewalk shed in Chelsea on Monday morning, injuring three people and prompting a significant emergency response. The accident occurred around 8:17 AM on West 29th St, between 7th and 8th Avenues.

According to authorities, the collision caused the sidewalk shed to collapse, critically injuring one person and leaving two others with serious injuries. All three victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital for medical treatment. The 62-year-old driver of the box truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The FDNY responded with 12 units and approximately 60 members to manage the situation and ensure the safety of the area. The New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) was also on-site to inspect the collapsed sidewalk shed and assess the structure. FDNY Deputy Chief Michael Barvels stated that the cause of the crash remains under investigation but noted that the collision with the parked box truck led to the shed’s collapse.

Authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash. Our thoughts are with those injured in this incident as they recover.

Sidewalk Safety Concerns in Urban Areas

Urban areas like Chelsea often have sidewalk sheds erected for construction or maintenance purposes, which can pose unique risks to pedestrians and vehicles. Incidents like this one highlight the potential dangers associated with improper parking, structural issues, or unforeseen collisions near these temporary structures.

The New York City Department of Buildings oversees sidewalk shed inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards. However, drivers and contractors must also exercise caution in such areas to prevent accidents that could lead to injuries or structural damage.

If you or someone you know has been affected by an accident involving a sidewalk shed or construction-related structure, understanding your rights and seeking support is essential. Injuries in such incidents can result in significant medical expenses, emotional trauma, and long-term consequences for victims.
