Chelsea, NY (November 18, 2024) – A box truck collided with a sidewalk shed in Chelsea on Monday morning, injuring three people and prompting a significant emergency response. The accident occurred around 8:17 AM on West 29th St, between 7th and 8th Avenues.
According to authorities, the collision caused the sidewalk shed to collapse, critically injuring one person and leaving two others with serious injuries. All three victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital for medical treatment. The 62-year-old driver of the box truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
The FDNY responded with 12 units and approximately 60 members to manage the situation and ensure the safety of the area. The New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) was also on-site to inspect the collapsed sidewalk shed and assess the structure. FDNY Deputy Chief Michael Barvels stated that the cause of the crash remains under investigation but noted that the collision with the parked box truck led to the shed’s collapse.
