St. George, KS (November 17, 2024) – A collision involving two vehicles left one individual with serious injuries early Friday morning on US-24 highway near Blackjack Rd, just north of St. George in Pottawatomie County. The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

The crash was reported around 7:31 a.m., when a 2024 Kia Telluride, stopped at a stop sign on Blackjack Rd, attempted to cross the eastbound lanes of US-24 to enter the westbound lanes. During this maneuver, the driver of the Kia failed to see a 2016 Nissan Versa traveling in the left eastbound lane of US-24, resulting in a collision.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as 37-year-old Awa Fanny Massounga Bora of Manhattan, sustained serious injuries. She was transported to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, KS, for treatment. The Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed that Bora was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Kia, 57-year-old Michael David Pilat of St. George, was not injured. Pilat was also confirmed to have been wearing his seatbelt. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles at the time of the collision.

Traffic in the area slowed following the crash, though no significant lane blockages were reported. Additional details regarding the incident remain under investigation.

Our thoughts are with Awa Fanny Massounga Bora as she recovers, and we wish her a full and swift recovery.

Intersection Accidents in Kansas

Intersections, such as US-24 and Blackjack Rd, are common locations for traffic collisions due to the convergence of vehicles traveling in different directions. Misjudgments, such as failing to see oncoming traffic, frequently contribute to crashes that can result in severe injuries or fatalities.

In Kansas, state agencies like the Kansas Highway Patrol play a crucial role in investigating such incidents to determine their causes and implement measures to prevent future occurrences. Wearing seatbelts, as evidenced in this crash, can significantly reduce the severity of injuries in vehicle collisions.
