Beaver Township, OH  (November 16, 2024)  – A tragic single-vehicle crash in Beaver Township on Friday morning claimed the life of one individual and left another with serious injuries. The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Canfield Post is leading the investigation into the incident, which occurred at approximately 11:14 AM on State Route 7 near W. Middletown Rd in Mahoning County.

Authorities report that a Buick SUV traveling northbound on State Route 7 veered off the roadway and struck a utility pole before becoming engulfed in flames. Beaver Township EMS extricated the driver, identified as 66-year-old Sam Yovanovich of Youngstown, who was then transported to St. Elizabeth Mercy Hospital in Youngstown for treatment of serious injuries. Tragically, the passenger, 77-year-old Karen Mraz of Columbiana, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Beaver Township Fire, EMS, and Police responded swiftly to the crash site to assist with rescue efforts and contain the fire. Officials have confirmed that both individuals in the vehicle were wearing seat belts and that drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a role in the incident.

The crash caused significant disruptions in the area as emergency crews worked to investigate and clear the scene. The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances leading to the collision.

Our thoughts go out to the family of Karen Mraz, and we wish Sam Yovanovich a speedy and full recovery during this difficult time.
