El Paso County, CO (November 14, 2024) — A Colorado State Patrol (CSP) trooper was seriously injured on Wednesday afternoon after a suspected DUI driver crashed into the patrol vehicle. The incident occurred at the intersection of Little Turkey Creek Rd and Highway 115, south of Colorado Springs, while the trooper was investigating a separate crash.

The CSP reports that Trooper Tyler Atkins was inside a marked patrol SUV when a sedan collided with it. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage. Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene, and Trooper Atkins was airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, he was released later that day and is now recovering at home. The driver of the sedan, who is suspected of driving under the influence, was also hospitalized. Authorities have yet to release the driver’s identity.

Highway 115 was temporarily shut down while investigators examined the scene and cleared the wreckage. This marks the 11th time a CSP vehicle has been struck by another driver this year, according to agency reports.

Our thoughts are with Trooper Atkins and all those affected by this alarming incident.

DUI Accidents in Colorado

Driving under the influence remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents in Colorado, posing a serious threat to public safety. Incidents involving DUI drivers, like the crash on Highway 115, highlight the devastating impact of impaired driving. Troopers and other first responders are particularly vulnerable when performing their duties on roadways, often in hazardous conditions.

DUI-related crashes not only result in injuries and fatalities but also leave a lasting impact on victims, their families, and the community. Colorado law imposes severe penalties on impaired drivers, yet accidents persist. These tragedies underscore the importance of continued efforts to prevent DUI incidents through awareness campaigns, strict enforcement, and legal accountability.
